The Department of Geography invites applications for admission to its Taught and Research Postgraduate Programmes. We have a number of studentship opportunities for September 2009, which include Masters Studentships as detailed below. Founded in 1908, the Department of Geography is one of the leading research departments in the country. According to the results of the independent 2008 Research Assessment Exercise the Department is by all measures within the top 10 Departments in the UK. It was also graded 5A in both the previous two Research Assessment Exercises. With over 30 full-time academic staff, a graduate school of over 50 PhD and Masters students, we are one of the largest Geography departments in the UK and a global leader in several research fields including Climate and Cryosphere, Drylands Research, Social and Cultural Geographies, and Social And Spatial Inequalities.

Masters Studentships

The Department of Geography is funding up to six £1,000 bursaries, exclusively for exceptional students wishing to take any of its Masters programmes. The department also has two dedicated Masters-level University Studentships that come with bursaries and a half stipend. In addition, there are a number of £2,000 bursaries available only to University of Sheffield graduates via the Alumni Office for our Masters degree programmes. We are also able to offer one fully-funded ESRC 1+3 PhD studentship to highly qualified students. Students following the “1+3” route must study in their first year on the MA in Human Geography Research (also see “1+3 studentships” above). The University of Sheffield also has a number of fully or half-funded PhD and Masters studentships. These awards are open to UK, EU and international applicants. International applicants are only eligible providing they can demonstrate that they have sufficient funds to cover the difference between the UK and international students tuition fee (for more information see: http://www.shef.ac.uk/pgresearch/studentships/uos.html ). In addition, the MSc in Social and Spatial Inequalities has up to six dedicated bursaries available for this course, offering fee-free places to students from the UK and other EU countries (please see below for more details).
