Plant cell wall carbohydrates are used to produce bulk hydrocolloids, release specific nutrients and value added chemicals for cosmetic purposes from natural plant sources, and are now the focus for the efficient conversion of feed stocks for biofuel production in the biorefining process. The project builds upon research carried out to establish the enzyme as a key component of an existing enzyme mixture marketed by Biocatalysts.

The aim of the project will be to clone the gene(s) encoding the xylosidase and express these in a compatible microorganism suitable for industrial fermentation. The source of the enzyme is a thermophillic fungus, isolates of which are available in our culture collection. The enzyme has been purified and demonstrated to be composed of two protein subunits. These subunits are either proteolytically cleaved from a single gene product or encoded on two separate genes. Protein sequences have been determined from within each subunit and constitute the starting point for the project, where the molecular cloning steps will be performed using equipment based at the University of Nottingham and the production phases (enzyme characterisation, fermentation and scale-up) will be centred at Biocatalysts.

Students should have a degree in life sciences (2:1 or equivalent). There will be period of industrial training at Biocatalysts Ltd near Cardiff.

This is a BBSRC Case studentship with Biocatalysts Ltd and is available for a period of three years from 1 October 2009 and provides funding for Home/EU students only (due to funding restrictions).

Applications, with a letter of application, detailed CV and the names and addresses of two referees should be sent to Professor I Connerton, Division of Food Science, School of Biosciences, The University of Nottingham, Sutton Bonington Campus, Loughborough, LE12 5RD. The project is in collaboration with a large consortium of committed industrial partners including Boeing, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Corus, Alcoa, Novelis, Siemens, Arups and many others. The project has two major aims: to develop and demonstrate the technologies required to support a low carbon metals economy; to identify the barriers to achieving the carbon targets in the sector and identify the mechanisms of change required by required business and government.

The PhD students will work on three areas of technology that will become vital as we move to a low carbon economy:
- Lightweight design and manufacturing technology: the theory of structural optimization is mature, but has had little practical application as it leads to designs that are difficult to manufacture. This PhD will expand the theory of structural optimization to apply to real manufacturing processes, and show the possibility of reducing the amount of metal in use through design and construction of physical demonstrators including variable section I-beams for construction, and ribbed body parts in car manufacture.
- Minimising energy in forming and fabrication: a low carbon economy will mainly use recycled materials, and once this is established the energy required to form parts from stock will be a large part of the ‘embedded energy’ in a product. This area has to date received very little attention, so this PhD will develop the basic theory to allow design of minimum energy forming, and will design, construct and evaluate physical demonstrators of novel low energy forming processes.
- Reusing metal without melting: If metal demand doubles by 2050, as anticipated, there will not be enough energy available in a low carbon economy to meet requirements by conventional recycling via melting. Up to half of metal must be recycled without melting, but this area has received little attention.

This PhD will identify the requirements for product design, joining techniques, in-service monitoring, deconstruction, post-service assessment, geometry and property adjustment and certification required to re-use metal. The project will include the design and construction of demonstrators related to construction, and extension of existing work on recycling by cold-bonding.

Candidates for these positions should have a good first degree in engineering, materials sciences or applied maths from a top university. Strong candidates will be able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for problem-solving, a curiosity about basic principles and the ability to communicate professionally with the industrial partners.

These positions are fully funded by the UK government through EPSRC, including a tax-free grant at normal EPSRC rates, and are open only to UK and EU nationals. Please do not apply if you do not meet this nationality restriction.

To apply for one of these positions, please send a CV and covering letter to Dr Julian Allwood, Department of Engineering, Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX. It provides integrated training in theoretical and experimental neurosciences and psycholinguistics with clinical issues. The aim of the Masters Course is to train highly qualified advanced students who are excellently prepared for research work and Ph.D. programmes in the above fields.

The transnational consortium comprises four universities: Groningen (NL), Joensuu (FI), Milano-Bicocca (IT) and Potsdam (DE). The programme consists of three terms: the core courses offered in the first term aim at providing the students with general knowledge about the fields mentioned above. During the second and third term, the students attend specialised courses. For the second term, students may choose to move from their first host university to another one, while all students meet at the University of Potsdam during the third term. To finish the programme successfully, the student writes a Masters thesis and attends a summer school or conference. All courses are taught in English.

The EMCL programme is part of the Erasmus Mundus initiative of the European Union, providing an Erasmus Mundus scholarship covering tuition fees (? 7,500.-), living and travelling costs for non-EU students admitted to the programme (amounting to a total of ? 29,000.-/scholarship). The EMCL- programme thus has a strong extra-European profile. Students from EU-countries may not apply for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship, but pay a reduced tuition fee of 2,700.-. Applications from EU students are highly welcome.

Requirement for application is at least three years of higher education (B.A., B.Sc. or equivalent) with an emphasis on linguistics, speech and language pathology, biomedical sciences, psychology or special education.

Application Deadline: 15-Jan-2009

Web Address for Applications: http://www.emcl-mundus.com

Contact Information:
PD Dr. Frank Burchert
f.burchert@mac.comUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400927691188643475.post-38914490375573189162009-01-04T18:55:00.000-08:002009-01-04T18:56:01.344-08:00Postgraduate Scholarship Available - La Trobe University, Melbourne , AustraliaPostgraduate Scholarship Available - La Trobe University, Melbourne , Australia Two Year Postgraduate Scholarship in Emotionally Intelligent ICTs for Social Innovation
School of Business La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia

As part of an Open Innovation Research Program with global electronics
corporation NEC Japan, Masters by Research scholarships are available for
deserving candidates.

* Background*

Sensemaking is an emerging paradigm for understanding social dynamics in
organisations. It postulates that the process of translating the personal
interpretation, knowledge or meaning into a specific behaviour, decision or
action is moderated by interaction of an individual's rational with their
affective characteristics. It proposes to significantly alter the analysis
and interpretation of data about people, internet users and employees in an
organisation. In general, emotional systems in humans influence many
cognitive processes including decision making, focus and attention, goal
generation and categorization, all of which are important for design of
human-centred intelligent systems.

In this context, ICTs which form an integral part of organisations can be
used as effective tools for social innovation. It is envisaged that
emotionally
intelligent ICTs would play a pivotal role in design of sustainable
organisations in the 21st century by improving the quality of life at work
(e.g., through design of emotionally cohesive and culturally fit teams)
and at home, by provision of emotionally intelligent health care and health
promotion systems (especially for the elderly) to help control spiraling
health care costs, and by facilitating travel and e-tourism through
emotionally intelligent e-tourism systems.

The postgraduate students will be expected to work on the following research
projects

1. Human-centred intelligent system for constructing emotionally cohesive
and culturally fit teams.
2. Emotionally intelligent persuasive dialog system for health promotion.

3. Emotionally intelligent health care (nurse) robot for pre and
post-operative care.
4. Emotionally Intelligent e-tourism system for holiday destination
planning and sight seeing.

The postgraduate students will be supervised by a research team consisting
of researchers from La Trobe university and NEC Corp., Japan. The research
team is headed by La Trobe's Associate Prof. Rajiv Khosla. An annual stipend
of up to AUD 25,000 per annum for 2 years is available from Jan 2009 for
deserving candidates. The annual stipend includes a research internship for
6 months each year (i.e., in 2009 and 2010) at NEC's technologically
advanced research lab in Japan.

*Eligibility Requirements:*

The prospective candidate must have completed a four-year undergraduate
degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or equivalent with an
average of 80% or above. Interested candidates can contact Associate
Prof. Rajiv Khosla (r.khosla@latrobe.edu.au ) directly with your CV,
academic transcripts, .and relevant R&D experience. The candidates must also
include a covering letter with a brief description outlining the research
project they are interested in and relevant skills for the project.

Knowledge in areas like emotional intelligence, natural language processing,
affective computing and human-centred e-tourism would be a benefit.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400927691188643475.post-82056220210489332892009-01-04T18:53:00.000-08:002009-01-04T18:54:43.121-08:00UK: Masters Studentships in Human Geography ResearchThe Department of Geography invites applications for admission to its Taught and Research Postgraduate Programmes. It provides integrated training in theoretical and
experimental
neurosciences and psycholinguistics with clinical issues. The aim of
the Masters
Course is to train highly qualified advanced students who are
excellently
prepared for research work and Ph.D. programmes in the above fields.

The transnational consortium comprises four universities: Groningen
(NL),
Joensuu (FI), Milano-Bicocca (IT) and Potsdam (DE). The programme
consists of
three terms: the core courses offered in the first term aim at
providing the
students with general knowledge about the fields mentioned above.
During the
second and third term, the students attend specialised courses. For
the second
term, students may choose to move from their first host university to
another
one, while all students meet at the University of Potsdam during the
third term.
To finish the programme successfully, the student writes a Masters
thesis and
attends a summer school or conference. All courses are taught in
English.

The EMCL programme is part of the Erasmus Mundus initiative of the
European
Union, providing an Erasmus Mundus scholarship covering tuition fees
(?
7,500.-), living and travelling costs for non-EU students admitted to
the
programme (amounting to a total of ? 29,000.-/scholarship).
